Hulakai (Sea Dancer in Hawaiian) is the name of our sailboat. She has several personalities: 1) Competitive racing machine, 2) Safe and gentle vessel for scenic passages across the Bay, 3) Serene office attended by swishing water and seagulls, and 4) An overnight refuge.
For those enjoying a day sail across the Bay, you can count on spectacular scenery and enough fresh sea air to jolt you out of your daily routine. You will also experience the reason sailors around the world consider San Francisco Bay a sailing Mecca: Ferocious winds! Since wind is the engine for sailboats, San Francisco for sailors is like a place where everyone drives 500 HP cars. Amazingly, though, sailing to Sausalito or anchoring on the lee side of Angel Island can provide warm sunbathing oases at the same time others on the Bay are wrapped in foul weather gear and hanging on for dear life.
Warning:
Although I'm a mellow skipper, my First Mate, Jan, will not put up with
slackers on the race course. (But she's a sweetheart on cruises.)
